Some rubber tubs are made from recycled tyre rubber and some from new rubber compounds. Both are useful, and the choice depends on what the tub will do. Three models in our range, the 12 L BP012B, the 25 L BF025 and the 39 L BF039, are made from recycled tyre rubber. This guide explains the practical differences. Statements about the materials are general; specific compounds vary.
What recycled tyre rubber is
Recycled tyre rubber comes from end-of-life tyres that are cut, ground and moulded again into new products. It keeps the characteristics of tyre rubber: black, dense and tough. New rubber compounds are mixed from raw rubber and additives to a chosen recipe and moulded the same way.
Comparison
| Property | Recycled tyre rubber | New rubber compound |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Black; surface can show grain from the ground rubber | Smooth; other colours possible by compound |
| Odour | Often a stronger tyre-like smell that fades with time | Usually lower, depends on compound |
| Cost | Generally lower | Generally higher |
| Control of hardness and formula | Limited by the source material | Wide: compound can be set to a hardness and property target |
| Sustainability | Gives used tyres a second life | Uses new raw material |
Where recycled tyre rubber tubs fit
- Construction: carrying and mixing mortar, sand and debris.
- General farm work: mucking out, carrying silage and manure.
- Workshops and yards where appearance is not important and toughness is.
When to choose new rubber
- Applications with feed, drinking water or odour sensitivity.
- When you need a particular hardness, a specific compound or a different colour.
- OEM products to a defined formula.
The models
Our recycled tyre rubber tubs sit in two families. See the flexible rubber tubs and the rubber pans to compare their sizes with new-rubber models of similar capacity.
