Above 56 litres, buckets and pans stop being practical. Our oval tubs cover 58 litres up to 432 litres in four sizes. They are made from plastic and rubber, so they combine a rigid, durable body with the toughness of rubber. This guide gives the size, weight and use for each.
The four sizes
| Model | Capacity L | US gal | L × W × H mm | Empty kg | Full of water, approx. kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PP058 | 58 | 15.3 | 730 × 500 × 260 | 4.0 | 62 |
| PP115 | 115 | 30.4 | 900 × 650 × 310 | 6.8 | 122 |
| PP154 | 154 | 40.7 | 1020 × 750 × 360 | 9.0 | 163 |
| PP423 | 432 | 114.1 | 1280 × 950 × 500 | 20.0 | 452 |
Choosing a size
- PP058, 58 L. The smallest oval tub is manageable by one person when empty and by two when full. It suits shared feed and water for a few animals, and general mixing.
- PP115, 115 L. A mid-size tub for a stable or small herd, for mixing, or for washing equipment.
- PP154, 154 L. Enough water for several animals; also used for bulk mixing and for soaking.
- PP423, 432 L. The largest tub is a trough or a storage and mixing tank. A full 432 L tub weighs about 452 kg and cannot be moved when it is full, so place it before filling.
Placing and emptying
A large tub is placed on level ground. Fill it with a hose and empty it with a pump or a siphon, or by tipping a smaller tub into it. If the tub must be moved, empty it first. Even a 154 L tub weighs 163 kg when full, which is not a load for one person.
Water intake for planning
As a guide, an adult horse drinks roughly 25–50 litres a day, a beef cow 30–60 litres and a sheep 4–10 litres, more in hot weather. A 115 L tub therefore gives a couple of horses a day’s water, and a 432 L tub several animals. See rubber feed tubs for horses and livestock for sizing by animal.
Smaller volumes
If you do not need so much, a flexible tub (10–40 L) or a 56 L rubber pan is easier to move. For the shapes compared, see bucket, pan or tub.
