How to Clean and Care for Rubber Buckets and Tubs

Rubber buckets and tubs need very little care, which is part of their appeal. A few habits do make them last longer and keep them clean. This guide covers cleaning, odour, storage and the signs that a bucket has reached the end of its life. The advice is general; if you use a bucket with chemicals, check compatibility with the manufacturer first.

Cleaning

  1. Empty the bucket and rinse it with clean water to remove loose dirt, feed or mortar.
  2. Scrub with warm water and a mild detergent, using a soft brush or sponge.
  3. Rinse thoroughly so that no detergent remains, especially if the bucket is used for animal feed or water.
  4. Turn it upside down to dry in the shade.

For dried cement or mortar, soak the bucket in water first and flex the sides to loosen the crust. Do not strike the bucket with a hard tool; the rubber will not crack but the surface can be scored.

What to avoid

  • Solvents and fuels. Petrol, diesel, thinners, acetone and strong solvents can soften or swell many rubber compounds. Do not use them for cleaning.
  • High heat. Do not pour boiling water repeatedly or leave the bucket on hot surfaces. Many general-purpose rubbers soften and age faster above about 70–80 °C.
  • Sharp tools. Shovels and trowels can cut the surface. Use a plastic scraper.
  • Long periods in strong sunlight. Ultraviolet light and ozone age rubber over time. See rubber products outdoors for details.

Odour

New rubber products can have a noticeable rubber smell, which fades with time. To reduce it, wash the product with warm water and mild detergent and let it air in a ventilated, shaded place for a few days before using it with feed or drinking water. If odour matters for your application, tell the manufacturer before ordering; we can discuss the compound.

Storage

  • Store indoors or in the shade, away from direct sunlight and from heaters.
  • Keep buckets away from electric motors and welding equipment, which produce ozone.
  • Stack nested buckets without heavy items on top. Rubber returns to shape, but long periods under load can leave a set.
  • Keep the buckets dry before storage to avoid mildew on stuck-together surfaces.

When to replace a bucket

Replace the bucket if you see any of these:

  • deep cracks, especially at the base or around the rim;
  • a sticky or chalky surface that rubs off;
  • a permanently deformed shape that does not recover;
  • leaks, if the bucket is used for liquids.

Light surface crazing from sunlight is cosmetic. Sticky or deeply cracked rubber is not.
